How to Clean an Ergovea Pillow

August 11, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

We got asked how to clean our organic pillows and mattresses. It was a simple question but one that we have never addressed before! Cleaning your bed products is very important. Every night you sweat and shed dead skin cells on our bedding, it's the uncomfortable truth. After waking up in the morning and making the bed you trap those substances in our bedding. Regularly cleaning sheets, duvets, mattress and topper cases, pillows, pillow cases, and blankets helps keep your bedroom healthy and happy.

  • Keep your pillow clean, cover it with a pillowcase
  • Air pillow seasonally (in sunlight)
  • Increase pillow loft, put the pillow in the dryer with a new tennis ball. Keep on a gentle cycle with cool air. The tennis ball will beat the sides of the pillow and fluff it back to life.
  • If your pillow has to be washed then spot clean it. Use Dr. Bronners soap or an ecological laundry detergent and treat the stain. Avoid any harsh detergents.
  • After spot cleaning, place the pillow in the sun. This will kill bacteria, mites, mildew, and deodorize the pillow. If you own a wool pillow the sunshine will restimulate the fibers in the pillow.

It is also important to note that all Ergovea mattress and topper encasements are machine washable. If you have any further questions on how to treat and clean Ergovea products feel free to contact us at, 1-888-559-5051.

The Truth Behind Traditional Mattresses

August 10, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

When it comes to providing a holistic approach to your health, accurate information is key! Comfort must extend beyond physical contentment, to include a healthy and safe sleep environment. What you don't know about traditional mattress materials and construction can cause harm to your health and well being, as well as that of your loved ones. The list of toxins continually being admitted into your body from chemicals and synthetics in conventional mattresses seems to grow daily.

Did you know that as well as breathing, your pores open at night, and skin naturally absorbs what it comes in contact with? Plastics, foams and polyesters—used heavily in most traditional mattresses, can emit toxic gasses that you inhale and absorb throughout the night. Commercially processed cotton is saturated in pesticides, contributing to your nightly dose of chemicals as well.

Though the models in the mattress industry advertisements look happy and comfortable, there is a secret they aren’t telling you. Over the last few decades, natural mattress materials have been replaced with petroleum-based synthetics. Nearly all mattresses in use today contain polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates, formaldehyde, chemical fire retardants or barriers, and an extensive list of added industrial chemicals, many of which have been untested and approved by our Federal Government.

Recent professional studies have questioned the use of these materials. The proven effects of these materials is still unknown, mostly because tracking their long term effects is virtually impossible. The problem with these hazardous and toxic chemicals making their way into our mattresses and bedding is that our bodies are continuously breathing and absorbing whatever chemicals are used. Even if we are absorbing these chemicals in low doses, the fact is we spend over 1/3 of our time as humans sleeping, this is a significant amount of time to allow our bodies such close and extended exposure to potentially harmful materials

Organic mattresses are made using the same techniques and as their non-organic rivals, but without the harmful chemicals associated with conventional mattresses. The highest quality organic materials and craftsmanship are present in all products made by Eco Bedroom Solutions. The only thing you'll be losing is the toxicity and potential adverse health risks that conventional mattresses provide.

When you purchase an organic mattress or organic bedding products made by Eco Bedroom Solutions, you'll be eliminating the hazardous chemicals from your bedroom and creating a healthier sleep environment. Purchasing an organic mattress and bedding is not only an investment in a comfortable night sleep, but it is also an investment in your overall health and wellness.

WE USE ONLY AUTHENTIC NATURAL RUBBER (100% POLYMER) WITH NO PETROLEUM CHEMICAL, SYNTHETIC FILLERS, ASH OR CHALK IN OUR PRODUCTION. WE COMPLY AND MANUFACTURE WITHIN STANDARDS APPROVED BY INDEPENDENT INSTITUTES FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE AND COMFORT.

College Tips: Getting Started

August 8, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

Getting Started at College

Congratulations you’ve made it! You are a college student and have taken the first step into adulthood. But what do you actually need to know when you arrive at college? We are here to guide you along all the rough terrain of life, from natural sleep to cleaning out your fridge. These are just a few small tips to make your transition into school easy and simple.

Get to know other students in advance.

Connecting with other students before you get on campus is a lifesaver, especially if you are moving away for school. Look on Facebook for groups of people going to your school. You can even check out local groups or fan pages in your area who share similar interests as you.

If you find any groups then get in touch with people in your classes. It will be nice to have a familiar face when you go on campus!

Buy/rent your textbooks before you arrive.

When everyone rushes to the bookstore for their textbooks the first couple weeks of school you could spend hours in line waiting to buy overly priced books. Before you even set a foot on campus and take your coursebook list online and buy/rent from your school, Amazon.com, Chegg.com, or Bookrenter.com. This same rule applies to ordering your parking pass, student id, and mini-fridge rental. The sooner you get it done the less lines you’ll have to wait in,

Find all of your classrooms in advance.

Nothing is worse than being lost on campus or walking into class late on the first day. To avoid embarrassing and stressful moments like that go around campus before classes start and map our where all your classes are. This will help you get your bearings and keep calm your first day.

Take part in activities.

If your school offers a few days filled with games and activities then join in! The first week is designed to help you meet other students and get to know what is on campus. During the first couple weeks there may be information booths and activities to inform you of clubs and campus sports. Look into Scout, Greek, drama, clubs, and sport opportunities if those interest you.

Talk to your academic advisor and your R.A.

If you ever have any questions go to your academic advisor or counselor (they help you with your course load and other academic concerns) and your resident advisor (an older student who helps with college life and questions). They are there to help you in any situation you are confused or concerned with and are trained to give you support.

The first month may be a little scary but you will get used to it. Remember to stay calm and rely on your friends and family. You aren’t on your own. We promise you that all your other classmates are just as nervous and uncomfortable, they will make the perfect friends.

Happy Room. Happy Sleep.

August 3, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

Assessing the bedroom. It’s not something we do often in our modern, busy schedules. However, a healthy sleep environment can help promote healthy, happy sleep. Let’s asses your bedroom situations and find some simple changes to make it the sleep sanctuary you deserve.

Lighting.

We addressed the issue with blue light and your sleep in our past blog post (Getting on a Sleep Schedule: Sleep happier, sleep healthier.) Since the blue light from electronics can hinder your body’s release of melatonin, it will cause you to be more awake and alert at night. After eliminating blue light from your bedroom, next is to find the perfect light mood. Make sure light from the outside is completely blocked from your bedroom and keep your lamps (that filter out blue light) 60 watts or under. Dimming your lights an hour before you get into bed will start to relax your mind and body.

Temperature.

It sounds simple but the temperature of your bedroom can cause you to sleep great or not so great. Keep the bedroom temperature between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit all year round to ensure a good night's sleep.

Clean.

A clean house is a clean mind. Keeping your bedroom and home environment organized, clutter free, and clean will help you get into a relaxing mental state. Toning down the visual chaos around you and only surrounding yourself with soothing items will help you relax and destress.

Bedding.

The importance of a supportive, healthy, and quality mattress is imperative to consistent deep sleep. If your mattress is uncomfortable, sagging, causes pain, or prevents you from getting a good night's sleep it is probably time for a new one. Visit sleep experts who can fit you for your perfect mattress, topper, or pillows. They will be able to find the best sleep situation for you. To find mattress retailers who can fit you for your best mattress visit our Find A Retailer page.

If you are unable to update your mattress, topper, or pillows try finding the perfect duvet and blankets for your bed. Something breathable and soft is always preferred.

Getting on a Sleep Schedule: Sleep happier, sleep healthier.

Sleep happier, sleep healthier.

We all know that an inconsistent sleep pattern can leave you tired, cranky, and unproductive. This is why we always recommend having a normal sleep schedule, but that seems easier said than done. However, with just a few changes to your everyday routine you can get to bed and wake up consistently.

Stay Consistent.

Your first task on hand is to pick a bedtime and a time to wake up. Once you do that you have to stick to them! As hard as it may be, try and stick to those times. Even on the weekends try your hardest to not sleep in for more than an extra hour. Doing this will allow your circadian rhythm (your 24-hour body clock) to gain consistency and accuracy.

Go for Slow Adjustments.

Just like any big readjustment to your life take your time changing your sleep schedule. The best way to change is to make small adjustments every night. If you want to go to sleep at 9:30pm instead of midnight then every few days work your way back in 15-minute increments. For example the first few nights go to bed at 11:45pm, then move your sleep time back to 11:30 for the next few nights.

See the Morning Light.

Opening the curtains to let in the light or going outside in the sun for a bit in the morning will cue your brain to become alert. Our bodies are sensitive to light and dark, exposing it to sunshine will help it wake up.

Dim the Night Lights.

Likewise, too much light in the evenings can signal that you should stay awake. Before bedtime, dim as many lights as possible and turn off bright overhead lights. Turn off computers, tablets, smartphones, and the TV about an hour before bed. Since we are sensitive to light our minds are tricked by electronics blue light into thinking it’s daytime.  since your eyes are especially sensitive to the blue light from electronic screens. So dim the lights, turn off the tech, and start relaxing.

Meal Time.

Avoid going to bed on a full stomach or drinking lots of water before bedtime. Having dinner near the same time each night can keep your whole body clock on track. Try to eat your last meal two to three hours before your bedtime. If this is unavoidable then try to just eat a small amounts of food that are high in carbohydrates and protein.

Getting Sleep After Having a Baby

August 1, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

Welcoming a new human into the world is wonderful, but sleep deprivation was absolutely awful. When it comes newborns, parents get the brunt end of sleepless nights and what seems to be an endless journey of wakeup calls. We have some helpful hints to regaining your pre-baby deep sleep.

So, what’s a mom and dad to do?

1. Sleep when your baby sleeps. Though it may feel counter-productive to sleep when nap time is your only free time, it is important for you to refresh your mind and body when you can.

2. Let loose of the night owl in you. Though you may be a late night guy or gal and love catching up on late night television, your body will love sleep more. To ensure adequate sleep, adjust your sleep routine, and  stick to it.

3. Try horizontal breastfeeding every once in awhile. It can be comforting and restful for baby and can allow you some extra snoozes. A warning, though: This can easily become a crutch for your baby because it also becomes a naptime. It can also be a trick when you begin weaning, so proceed with caution.

4. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask and receive help. Relatives and friends will be sure to offer help and jump at an opportunity to watch your little one. Take the help! Get some zzz’s while baby is being watched and bonding with your friends and family.

5. Team up with your partner. Your rest is important, so if you have a partner or someone who can help, think about pumping. If you’re not breastfeeding, allow that person to take an early morning shift. This will give you a few hours of much needed and uninterrupted sleep, and will allow your baby bond with your partner.

Though you may never again catch up on what your old sleep used to be, these tips and tricks can help. Good luck and have good sleep!
