Sleep and Muscle Growth

September 9, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions
Tuckedin-1580newj.jpg

Getting proper and long lasting sleep, "...just might be the most important element of your training." states Nick Ebner, N.A.S.M.-C.P.T., P.I.C.P.

As you sleep, especially in its deeper stages, your body goes through several changes. Your blood pressure lowers (critical for letting your heart rest), cardiovascular health obstacles are tackled here, and chronic/partial sleep deprivation is tamed by the release of hormones. During the middle of the night your body also releases human growth hormone- a vital hormone for muscular development.

This human growth hormone, in short, keeps you young.

Professional and elite amateur athletes know that sleep is vital for muscular regeneration and weight control. If you hate the idea of fad diets then regular exercise and a full night's sleep are the most best action plan.

"As we sleep, energy consumption is lowered, allowing us to use the high-quality food we eat during the day to more efficiently build muscle. Growth hormone is naturally released, improving muscular recovery and regeneration." - Nick Ebner, N.A.S.M.-C.P.T., P.I.C.P.

“You give your body the chance to repair, recharge, and regrow during sleep. It’s the ideal time to replenish nutrients, and, since your body isn’t moving, it allows the muscles to repair themselves.” says wellness expert Dr. Felecia Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, RACSM from Muscle & Fitness Blog

Bringing regulated sleep back into your normal life "diet" will help your mind and physical well being beyond measure. It will allow you to focus better, have a more attentive mind, and keep a lasting memory. Along with a proper lifestyle, healthy eating, and a "diet" of sleep and exercise will boost your immune system and keep your muscles in a repairing and healed state.

Tips to In Flight Sleeping

September 8, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions
planre.jpg

We know it's tricky to sleep on planes BUT it is especially difficult to sleep naturally and healthily on planes. Here are a few of our expert travel tips to sleeping clean and comfortable on your next overnight flight!

The Best Seat.

Know the seat that is best for you! Whether that is the seat next to the aisle so you can have easy access to the restroom or if thats next to the window so you can rest your head, make sure it suits your needs. Alyx Brown, a sports chiropractor at Arvada Sport and Spine Group states that stretching your legs is  important for your circulation and relaxation. Reclining the chair will also help ease pressure on your lower lumbar, this can allow for easier relaxation.

Keep the Routine.

Flying can cause your sleep schedule to go out of whack but try to stick to your routine. If you can schedule a flight that matches your routine then do but if not then stick to your bedtime routine. Fore example if you brush and wash your teeth every time you go to bed then do that! If reading always calms you down before sleeping then pack your current read in your carry on.

Dress Comfy, Be Comfy.

So before you go into a interview you dress for success, it's the same with flying. Dress for your own comfort and you will be comfortable (at least as comfortable you can be crammed near 200 strangers). Your pilled sweater, worn, and faded sweater that always keeps you warm is perfect for this occasion. Wear your softest and most beloved leggings, oversized shirts, sweatpants, cardigans, and socks while flying.

Limit Screen Time.

Blue light radiated from your computer, tablet, cell phone, and television keeps your body from producing melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that controls your body’s circadian, twenty-four-hour cycle, rhythm that regulates your sleeping and waking cycles. Straying away from our electronic devices a half hour before sleep can improve your sleep. Instead of spending time on distracting devices let your body relax by reading a book or practicing pre-sleep rituals.

Stay clean.

To avoid relying on sleep pills (e.g. drugs that contain melatonin) try bringing your favorite essential oils. You can rub it into your pressure points, put it on a handkerchief or even get a necklace that diffuses the oils. Our favorite for relaxation is lavender! -- Also try to skip the alcohol, it will only allow you to sleep for a few hours of sleep then hinder your sleep for the rest of the journey. It could also cause you to be dehydrated, need more water, and take more bathroom trips.

Ergovea and Quality

September 7, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions

We value healthy, comfortable, and quality designs in every product we design. Just as support is a key aspect to our mattresses so is having a quality product that reaches all of our standards.

Here is what ultimately makes our mattress and latex special- our rubber supplier owns their own plantations and has for four generations.

There are fewer steps in processing. The sap from the hevea tree goes straight into the molds for the mattresses instead of every other latex bed on the market being made from dehydrated rubber bought as a commodity from a broker. This gives us more control and a purer latex while being made through the dunlop process. Because it is so fresh it is supple and buoyant. Knowing the rubber lasts a long time we had to find a long lasting and quality fabric. So we elected to use a North Carolina vendor that helped us create a luxurious yet upholstery grade fabric that would last the extended lifetime of the mattress core itself.

Keeping a Healthy Home

Our atmosphere has to power to totally change the way we think, feel, and live. Taking the time to influence your surrounding that make you comfortable and happy is needed for the health of your home. Below are few tips and tricks for keeping a warm and peaceful home.

The placement of flowers in the home increases emotions, feelings, and positive social behavior. A behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School states, “As a psychologist, I’m particularly intrigued to find that people who live with flowers report fewer episodes of anxiety and depressed feelings,” Etcoff says. “Our results suggest that flowers have a positive impact on our well-being.”

Clear the clutter. Stuff is called stuff for a reason, it doesn’t have any rhyme or reason. Now this does not mean you need a perfectly minimal and crystal clean home, but too much clutter can add stress to your life. Declutter your home, and declutter your mind!

A house with colors you love is a home. Just like a cluttered home, a home with too much explosive colors can be stressful and overwhelming. However, with neutral, soothing colors your home will take on a peaceful and warm atmosphere that invites you to relax by the end of the day.

We spend 1/3 of your life sleeping with that reason in mind, it is important to sleep and invest in bedding that you love. Breathable, comfortable, soft, natural, and hypoallergenic are the checklist you want to use when finding a mattress, toppers, pillow, duvets, or sheets.

The findings showed “aromatherapy and footbath reduces anxiety in active phase in nulliparous women.”

Take a nap, Rule the world

August 31, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions
bigstock--144716216.jpg

Though we promote natural, healthy, and energizing sleep we know that it isn’t always the easiest thing to achieve. Some days we just can’t function without a midday power nap. These are just a few health benefits and tips to taking a needed snooze every once in awhile.

Relieve Stress

Without regular and healthy sleep your stress hormones will continue to raise, but on the flip side your stress hormones go down with the more regular and valuable sleep you get. With short, possible consistent naps you can lower tension and increase your overall health. If you do begin to nap regularly, stick to a schedule. The best nap times are between 1:00pm and 3:00pm when your blood sugar and energy dips after lunch.

Gain Energy and Productivity

Stated in a healthy sleep article by Harvard Med, “...Both body temperature and caloric demand decrease during sleep, as compared to wakefulness. Such evidence supports the proposition that one of the primary functions of sleep is to help organisms conserve their energy resources.” Part of getting the most energy out of your naps is knowing the best way to nap. A 20-minute nap, or a stage two nap is best to improve motor skills and attention. A 60 minute to 90 minute nap will bring Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM your brain will make new connections and help with creative problem solving.

Improve Your Mood

Ever wake up grumpy and dreading the day ahead after a sleepless night? Well, taking a nap could actually ease that irritability and frustration. Just catching a few more zzz’s is better than taking an energy drink or cup coffee to boost your mood and productivity. In a 2014 Gallup-Healthways' survey of well-being, from 7,000 U.S. adults who reported those who got more sleep also had a higher overall well-being than individuals who got less sleep. According to Harvard Med there is a correlation of sleep and happiness, “University of Pennsylvania researchers found that subjects who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep a night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted. When the subjects resumed normal sleep, they reported a dramatic improvement in mood.”

A Note from the Founder

August 30, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions
PARKVICTORIAN.jpg

“I had been working for ten years at a major organic mattress brand where I helped build and create organic mattresses but when the economy turned I was laid off. I found that I had grown a passion over the past ten years for natural organic mattresses and the retailers I worked with. So I started consulting and sourcing raw materials as a consultant. As I stumbled upon this latex from Sri Lanka, I realized it had an amazing feel, smell, and story. One of the oldest rubber manufactures, established, owned their own plantations, and they employ over 30,000 people on the island. I felt lucky to find such a special product and I took it to the retailers and companies I was working with and they all shut down the prospect of this latex. As the thought grew in my mind I decided to invest in making a mattress collection that matched the characteristics of this rubber. After 18 months of testing the product on the mattress floor and the consumers morphed and shaped the product to help fit their needs, we had created the unique and special mattresses we have today.

After morphing this latex into a all natural mattresses that fits the needs of consumers I collaborated with the better mattress manufactures in the country. Next, I partnered with my co founder Andy Freedman and we were ready to launch this brand across North America."

Caring for your Ergovea Product

August 29, 2017 Eco Bedroom Solutions
bigstock-Young-beautiful-natural-blonde-109235228.jpg

A couple weeks ago we taught you how to properly clean your Ergovea natural pillow, this week we are bringing out the big guns. Below is a list of specific Ergovea product care directions, we tried to make the care and work you put into maintaining your natural mattress as simple and easy as possible.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Place your Ergovea mattress indoors, out of direct sunlight, and do not use it outdoors in unsheltered environments. Ensure adequate space between hot air vents and your mattress.

Appropriate Ventilation

It is important for all rubber mattresses to have proper air flow.  Please refer to the warranty for proper foundation specifications.  Do not place mattress on floor or solid wood surface of any kind.

Caring for Organic Rubber Latex

Your Ergovea 100% Natural Latex mattress will remain fresher when covered with a washable, waterproof mattress protector (purchased separately).

Appropriate Bedding

High-heat devices such as electric blankets, heating pads, irons or hair dryers can be used as long as they are not in direct contact with any natural latex component of your mattress.

Best Care & Cleaning Practices

Keep the waterproof, washable mattress protector (purchased separately) over your mattress during use. Machine wash the mattress protector (only) according to its manufacturer's directions.

When washing the mattress protector, you may 'air' the Ergovea mattress, but do not machine wash any part of the Ergovea mattress cover. Cover can be removed and “green cleaned” by a professional service.

If you should get stains on the Ergovea mattress cover, gently "spot clean" with a clean cloth and a few drops of mild non-detergent soap in a cup of water. Wipe mixture away with a clean, damp cloth and let the Ergovea mattress "air dry". Do not use a hair dryer to dry.

Sleeping with Wool

Sleeping With Wool

Nature's Natural Air Conditioning

Sleeping With Wool—Nature’s Natural Air Conditioning - Source: Christine Chamberlin, www.organic.org (Excerpt)

If the idea of sleeping with a wool comforter in the summer makes you sweat, think again. For over 12,000 years, wool has been used to make life more comfortable, especially in the hottest climes.

Wool bedding (mattress toppers, comforters, and pillows) actually provides the perfect temperature-controlled sleeping environment. Manufacturers have all tried to make a synthetic product with the qualities of wool, but to no avail.

A recent sleep study conducted by The Woolmark Company and the University of Sydney examined a variety of bedding products in a range of temperature and humidity environments, and wool was selected as the “undoubted winner.” This study proved wool breathes better than synthetics, increases periods of deep REM sleep, and also gets the body to a comfortable sleeping temperature quicker and maintains it for a longer period of time.

The following explains the benefits of wool and how it can help you sleep mofe comfortably during the summer.

Wool Is Animal-Friendly and Available Organically!

No animals are killed in the process of harvesting wool. As long as the sheep or alpaca graze in pesticide-free pastures for at least three years and are shorn using humane methods, wool batting can be considered organic, sustainable, and cruelty free.

Wool Regulates Body Temperature

Perhaps wool’s most-remarkable quality is its ability to maintain comfortable body temperature, no matter what the season. Wool produces warmth in winter without overheating, and—believe it or not—keeps you cooler on summer nights because of its natural moisture-wicking properties. Wool bedding works like a personal heating-and-cooling system, which makes it perfect for people who experience “night sweats.” A wool mattress topper or wool moisture pad can actually cool you off during the night by dissipating sweat through the wool’s coil-like fibers.

Wool Is Hypoallergenic

Wool is resistant to bacteria, mold, and mildew, which can trigger allergic reactions in some people. People with chemical sensitivities can also sleep without suffering if the wool is untreated.

Dust-mite allergens are the leading trigger for asthma attacks, but dust mites need moisture to survive, so they don’t like wool. Other types of bedding, such as down, feathers, or synthetic materials are more of a haven for dust mites.

Wool Is Soothing

Wool mattress toppers provide soft cushioning where your shoulders, hips, and knees meet your mattress. People who suffer from fibromyalgia, arthritis, and rheumatism find that wool buffers their sore body parts from their mattresses.

Wool Is a Natural Fire Retardant

Firefighters wear wool clothing. Why? When wool touches a flame, it won’t ignite because wool fibers do not support combustion. Wool is also used in natural and organic mattresses to meet fire-safety codes without using toxic chemical flame retardants.

Wool Is Soft!

Forget your association of wool with an itchy, scratchy sweater. Wool batting has a soft, down-like loft or puffiness. Pure-wool batting is sheared from living sheep or alpaca, washed without harsh soaps, and then carded (or combed) into soft, clean wool fill, which is placed inside cotton casings. There is no scratchiness at all.

How Wool Works

Wool fibers create a lining of still air, one of the best insulators found in nature. These little pockets of air create a dry layer of air next to your skin to hold in heat during colder months and cool your body as outdoor temperatures rise.

Evaporation of moisture is our body’s natural way of keeping cool. Wool helps this process along by drawing moisture from the body during sleep, absorbing it into cells, and reducing skin temperature. When you’re cooler, you toss and turn less often, and sleep more soundly in a deeper REM state.

In summer, outdoor heat is kept away from your skin because of wool’s insulating barrier of air pockets. Sleeping with a lightweight wool comforter acts like an air conditioner.

Where does all that moisture go? The average sleeper gives off nearly a pint of water vapor in an eight-hour sleep period. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight without feeling damp or clammy. The cells of wool fibers are porous, so they quickly and efficiently absorb and evaporate moisture—unlike down, which actually holds moisture and can create mildew.

Wool Bedding

Wool comforters, pillows, and mattress toppers can be found online or in specialty retail stores. When purchasing organic wool bedding, it’s a good idea to ask a few questions about where the wool comes from and how it was processed to be sure it has not been treated with chemicals.
